Given your mother's history, getting a mammogram sounds like a prudent thing to do, as the genetic link to breast cancer is well established. Sometimes, medical conditions are an outlier - my dad had atherosclerosis and died at 56, but he was the only one in his family with that problem, and neither my sister nor I have hardening of the arteries, heart problems or high triglycerides. Though it's true women are much less at risk for atherosclerosis, at least pre-menopause. (BTW, remember when low-fat diets were supposed to reduce the risk of breast cancer? Apparently not, at least in the US. Another dietary recommendation gone poof.)
