That depends or what you mean by used. It all you do is browse and use windows like apps then yes all is similar. If you stick with a main gui like gnome or kde or xfce then all is similar.

unix basics are linux basics, X11 is X11, window mangers are never never land if you goto virtual desks.
If you work single desk like a borg OS all is similar.

KDE was and is still a pig, gnome was doggy and is now not bad, almost good. xfce is fast but stupid to configure. unity is dumb.

fvwm was always very fast and easy and now is OK to configure. OK because one has to find all the apps that are compatible with fvwm and set up the menus. It used to be any gnome app would work fine in fvwm and not bugger fvwm functionality. Now some are OK and some take over window ops.

It used to be one could jump between window managers and they would not screw up the underlying X11 screen configurations. Not the case in u13.10 I expect I would find the same in fedora or any other current distro.
