Android Captures 53% Of U.S. Market In Q1 2014 Posted on Apr 18 2014 - 7:17pm by Chad Buenaflor A report recently released by research firm Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP) shows Google’s Android operating system dominating the U.S. market. Android grabbed 53 percent of all smartphone activations for the said time period while iOS only had 42 percent smartphone activations. Windows Phone and BlackBerry OS only have 1 percent each while basic phone activations stood at 3 percent. The CIRP data only shows activations and not on the actual number of devices running on Android and iOS. If the actual number were included then there would be a huge gap as the Android platform is the most popular mobile operating system in the U.S. and the whole world. Mike Levin, co-founder of CIRP, said that iOS grew faster than Android from a smaller base even though in absolute terms Android had a larger share of the market. What’s also interesting to note is that last year the number of activations for basic phones stood at 20 percent. This is now down to 3 percent for the first quarter which shows that it is about to become extinct. In terms of growth for the Android and iOS platform Levin said that “The long-term issue is where Android and iOS growth will come from when there are no more basic phones being retired. First-time smartphone buyers are key to that equation.” The CIRP was based on a survey conducted on 500 U.S. adults from April 1 to April 6 who activated new or used devices in the first three months of his year.
