Wow! Thanks for the very detailed post of your setup, that is very helpful. Sounds like you have a pretty cool system.

The joy and advantage of using a receiver is getting 5.1 or higher surround sound capability. There's nothing like watching a movie with it, especially if it really puts the extra channels to good use. It's also great for sports, it makes you feel more like you're at the stadium with the crowd noise all around you.

If you're worried about having yet another remote to deal with, I highly recommend the Logitech Harmony series of universal remotes – or at least the Harmony One I've used (now discontinued, but still found on eBay). It makes managing multiple devices like that a breeze. The Harmony One has a touchscreen LCD as well as buttons, and you program it with your computer (Mac or PC) using the Logitech software. It's really a glorious remote.

You didn't mention which router you use, so it is quite possible your movie playback issues are related to it. Is it a class N router, or just G? I've found that reliable wireless video streaming pretty much requires N speed. Router brand and model can matter too.
