TJ one major point is lost on you - Russia is a raw material country with a failed industrial economy the whole thing started due to

1. sliding raw material prices
2. inability to build a independent industrial economy to process those raw materials in widgets in demand
3.Ample new discoveries of other deposits of it s main export items
4. Deepening corruption beyond anyone's imagination
5. substantial brain drain further weakening its development
6. Inability to form a new coherent economic alliance within the former Soviet Union
7. wrongly placed sense of power and resurrection based on past abundance of cash from exports of raw materials
8 Successful inducement of Western Power that this time is different

and I can bring more points - IMHO the titanic is sinking and to divert attention and out of fear the present situation.

Now the main problem is the fact that you deal with a wounded aggressive entity and there must be a coherent policy to slowly calm it down and heal it. Unfortunate the Western leadership with all their high paid clerical force do not have the requested smarts or talent to do it, not to mention that their big corporation are totally blinded by greed. In addition they where "sleeping at the wheel" being concerned with listening (actually snooping) to the wrong audience / population.

The most outrageous part is that no one got fired or will pay for the consequences.

Best example is Rusal is it an aluminium company? What do they export? Aluminium the metal?

The answer is neither they own hydroelectric plants on Russian big rivers, that use the Russian natural resources to generate electricity and refine bauxite into aluminium.

Therefore Rusal is another energy exporting enterprise in the form of processed bauxite into aluminium
