Some times people change their minds based on how someone with a skewed opinion is treated. I remember in the mid sixties how hippies were treated, which was very harsh and unfair. By the end of the decade the biggest non-violent social movement in US history was in full swing and largely because the youth of that era were appalled by the unfair treatment dealt to kids they could identify with to some degree. Surely you remember that.

The treatment of Ben Carson seems unfair. Things like this could bring about a major shift in loyalties to the party.
