The average grade over the 15.7m interval is 1.13% nickel, 0.78% copper and 0.20% cobalt. These results, combined with the results of nearby holes 97-67 and 97-75, have significantly increased the potential for a massive sulphide deposit in the South Voisey's Bay project area. All drilling and sample handling for the 1997 exploration program were carried out under direct supervision by Teck Exploration personnel. Summary of All 1997 Joint Venture Exploration Programs The South Voisey's Bay project has now been the focus of three years of fieldwork by the company and its joint venture partners. Exploration during 1997 was focused on the main areas of exposed gabbroic rocks referred to as the north and south Gabbro. Reconnaissance mapping was completed over the entire project area and detailed grid mapping was conducted over the north and south Gabbro. Ground magnetic and electromagnetic surveys (242 line kilometers) were conducted over geophysical anomalies detected by previous airborne surveys. Detailed gravity surveys (425 line kilometres) were completed over all areas of known gabbro and a total of forty-four holes totalling 12,419m have been drilled on selected targets. Although the gravity surveys were initially designed to directly identify areas of sulphide mineralization, results of the first few drill holes showed that the large anomalies defined by these surveys represent thickened parts of the gabbro intrusions or potential feeder zones, favorable sites for accumulation of massive sulphides. Data from the gravity surveys has defined several areas of interest. To test the anomalies, several widely spaced drill holes were completed in each of the areas of interest. Although economic grade mineralization was only encountered in the west central part of the project area (Donner-Northern Abitibi joint venture) magmatic mineralization was observed in almost all of the areas tested. Given that these zones may be favorable sites for the accumulation of massive sulphides, extensive additional drilling will be required to fully evaluate their potential. |
