The people wanted independence from Russian control, Putin ain't happy about
that.
And the person he has to blame is staring right back at him in the mirror.

Putin is a control freak.. this is why he's held either the Presidency, or the Prime Minister position in Russian government since 1999.

He's basically lost his European energy markets for the long-term. He thought that he could demand respect by controlling their energy supply.. essentially dominate them.. But this latest episode has effectively woken Europe up to the threat that is posed by being too reliant upon Russian Gas. They will be looking for other sources, including Israel's new huge gas find that is still being developed.

So now Putin is trying to put together a deal with China to give him a new market. But that will take time, and it dramatically alters Russia's power, since China is not Europe. I don't think they will tolerate any political pressure using energy as a weapon.

The problem for Putin is that Russia really doesn't have anything to offer it's neighboring countries, other than commodities and weapons. Certainly nothing they cannot obtain from the west with far fewer strings attached, not to mention the attempts to manipulate their gov'ts and populations.

I did read an interesting "speculative" analysis into Putin's current thinking. Can't say I agree with all of it, but it does offer food for thought..
