it should be kept in mind that the number one responsibility of any corporation is to increase profit margins for its shareholders, not necessarily to promote the democracy or sovereignty of the countries they are operating in.

This is particularly the case for Chevron and Shell,

This pretty much tells us the perspective of the author.. It's just fine for Russia military forces to enhance Gazprom's profits...

Focus on condemning Chevron and Shell instead.. (not saying they are angels)..

I just find it a bit ironic that the first thing people would assert about overthrowing Saddam was its a "war for oil". Yet, US oil companies have really not participating in Iraq's oil exploration markets.. (the Iraqi gov't wants to big a cut of the revenues)..

But no one dares to utter a word of complaint about Putin trying to latch on to the 3rd largest NG deposits in Europe..

And that's just in the Western part of Ukraine.. There's more Shale Gas in the Eastern part of Ukraine too..

Also, note that area in the map that deals with the Baltic Basin? Sitting smack dab on Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia's territory.. Think Mad Vlad might want that deposit as well? After all, he's a significant shareholder in Gazprom, it's been reported..

Millions of people are on the verge of outright open conflict, death, and destruction.. All because Putin wants to control Natural Gas deposits? I think that sounds like a good "sound bite".. ;)
