But by paying more, a person can insure against the alternative of being stranded in the middle of nowhere. If that gas had been $8.00 a gallon, you would have bought a gallon or two. But at that price, there might have been a second gas station, which would drive the price of both lower. Free markets, while not perfect in all cases, are as close to perfect as any system can be.
