While I do not doubt your premise, I do not agree with your conclusion. The demographic of tech saavy, in the know population 20-30 years ago were a minority of internet users. Primarily the 'net world user consisted of the "backroom/DARPA savvy" professional group.

20-30 years ago, subscription newsletters, word of mouth, and even talking CNBC/FNN pre Bloomberg heads were the primary sources of buzz, let alone cascading anecdotal users. Even the famous Peter Lynch can illustrate THIS 3-D printer space with crayon on a scrap off paper.

This is NOT the same investor-specie pool of 20-30 years ago, which predates the goofy pre-HFT algo trading distortions.

I conclude the "consolidate to 3-4 players logic your espouse" and "sustainable profitability" FOR A 3-D printer mfgr listed equity will emerge waaaaAAAAaaaaay sooner than 20-30 years.

Don't count out Meg Whitman in the HP 3-D printer space when it comes to making this tech affordable and aimed at the less "geeky" end user, sooner rather than later in the massive, home consumer/ end user market segment.
