Um Tenchu, the supply chain was in even worse than GM and Chrysler. They had a decline in orders also and were working off a lower profit margin. If GM and Chrysler had gone through uncontrolled bankruptcy, they would have stopped production for a least a while.It would have taken time for the others producing cars to fill in the gap. Time the supply chain didn't have. So a wave of bankruptcy would have swept through the supply chain. This likely would have constrained the parts available to the car companies, compromising their viability.

So yeah, the bailout was totally unnecessary.
