>> No, I'm not saying we should lock up marijuana users for life to prevent this ... so please don't trot out that straw man.

It isn't a straw man. People are being locked up. But that isn't the worst of it.

There are so many problems with the conservative point of view on this. You can't correct them other than by making it legal to possess marijuana if you're not a minor. Everything else leaves in place the most tragic aspect of the drug war against marijuana, that is, the black market.

I understand your gut instinct. But the reality is that sd long as there is a black market for marijuana, you've got major problems. Marijuana will be easier for kids to get because they can get it at school instead of having to prove they're old enough in a convenience store. Because they're buying it from a drug dealer instead of a store clerk, it continues to be a gateway drug. Because a dope dealer would hell of a lot rather sell Oxycontin than pot. THEN you have a serious threat of a LIFETIME of addiction.

The damage to our individual rights is immeasurable. Cops arresting people so they can confiscate drug money on the highway. Slush funds packed with drug money in almost every sheriff's office, all unaccountable and often used for purposes it should not be used for. Courts watering down the Bill of Rights to permit illegal searches and at least four other amendments. And we have the highest incarceration rate in the world, with something like 1 in 5 imprisoned for nonviolent drug crimes.

All the while the drug problem just gets worse. We have more drug addicts in this country today than we've ever had. We have more drug overdose deaths than ever before. And that is before you count the murders that are related to marijuana, which are not tracked but easily amount to some thousands a year.

The DA in Houston recently made this comment in opposition to some of Obama's comments on marijuana legalization:

I welcome the President to come to Houston to review the same Capital Murder cases I did just last week that were the result of marijuana drug deals.

Just let that sink in for a moment. Duh.

The problem here is that you and many conservatives are so dogmatically opposed to drug abuse (as most of us are) that you are willing to sacrifice 10 kids to stop one from getting high. It just doesn't make any sense.
