Arnie,
Keep reading. Concentrate on the meaning of "time slot". Do a search on iDEN. 25Khz is one way.
Don't take wooden nickels from JPM. Check if they did any underwriting for NXTL. Check their basic assumptions. The laws of physics apply to everyone.
Of course NXTL's network can be build with fewer cell sites - simply because operates on lower frequences. The flip side of this coin is lower bandwidth/more busy signals, pricier and heavier handsets, shorter battery life. You get what you pay for, except that you'd have to pay more with Nextel. 7,000sqm is the local area size is the cell size. How do I know? The US territory is roughly 4,000,000sqm, divided by 6,000 cell sites equals to 7,000sqm/cell site.
7,000sqm translates into a 85 by 85 mile area... Do you really think 3,000 lines (assuming no "direct connect") would be sufficient to serve the needs of say the NYC metro area? Note that you can't add cell towers arbitrarily lest their transmitters would interfere with each other. DISADVANTAGE NEXTEL. PTB
