What is wrong with you people?

Man 'gropes woman's boobs on plane': Why on earth did it take FIVE minutes before passengers did anything? What's wrong with people? Do we not have to take some responsibility and intervene when we witness a woman apparently being groped in front of our eyes, asks Alice Arnold

A male passenger ‘ groped sleeping woman’s breast for FIVE MINUTESon a British Airways flight from London to San Francisco. This is the extraordinary headline that has many of us talking today.

Immediately many questions come to mind. The man arrested, Vinay Pochampally, was apparently drunk and leant over from the seat behind. He then allegedly slipped his hand under the woman’s garments and began fondling her. Other passengers witnessed the incident but did nothing about it!

It is times like this that I think the world has gone mad. Have we really reached an age where people will observe something like this and do nothing? This is not a dangerous environment. We are not talking about a dark, unlit passageway in the middle of the night. This is a British Airways flight. There are other passengers. There are crew members. It must be one of the safest environments in which to ‘intervene’.

It does appear that eventually crew members stopped the incident once they had been made aware of it by other passengers, but five minutes seems an awfully long time.

I can’t pretend that I am not surprised the victim didn’t wake up. She must have been very deeply asleep not to notice that something was happening but nevertheless it would be nice to think that others might look out for you.
