Oversimplification... be aware that there are vast atrophic dead zones in the seas that are gettting larger and larger. There's no shortage of nutrients there as cyanobacteria are thriving. This is poisonous bacteria and nothing else much lives in these zones.

Ocean fertilization is already going on with massive runnoff from farming operations.
