Sam, I've heard this also. There is a book out recently that chronicles the past 450 years of gold prices and during deflationary periods it did better than inflationary ones on a DOLLAR ADJUSTED BASIS. It would make sense to me that the hedge works differently in the different scenarios, but its still kinda a flight from other asset types; haven't thought about it too much though. When I rediscover the name of the author (its upstairs somewhere) I'll post it to you. Of course don't forget that we're in a new era where gold doesn't have any real value(ha ha, I hope).
