The oldest history of Alexander we possess was written by Diodorus of Sicily, who wrote between 60 and 30 BC. IOW almost 300 years after his death. The Anabasis of Alexander is the "best" history of Alexander's conquests and it was written by Arrian of Nicomedia, who lived from 86-160AD. So that was likely written at least 500 years after Alexander's death. Plutarch (AD 46-120) also wrote a histories of Alexander and many others. Considering these facts how can we know how much of his history is mere legend created to enhance his memory?

There are no manuscripts from Hannibal's time that mention him either. Nor any archeological evidence for his existence. How do you know the whole story of Hannibal ferrying African elephants to Spain and marching them to Italy, crossing the Pyrenees and the Alps on the way, is legend invented to make a Roman enemy seem more formidable?

BTW I do believe Alexander and Hannibal were real. I also believe Aristotle had Alexander the Great poisoned. For good reason, Alexander would have doubtless had Aristotle put to death if he ever returned to Macedon.
