That comment says you have no idea what is going on with drug addiction. You don't "tell" an addict not to be an addict anymore than you "tell" someone with a chronic illness not to be sick.

Addiction (which includes alcohol, nicotine, and other drugs) has a very strong genetic component. When combined with difficult childhood issues such as low self-esteem and sexual abuse, addiction may be an almost certain outcome for many. And it has little to do with what mom and dad tell them to do or not do.

But the Rx drug addiction crisis that is underway is also a function free availability of high addictive substances such as Oxycontin and Fentanyl on the street. I used just about every drug known to man when I was younger. Regardless of our genes, any of us can be one back problem away from a lifelong drug addiction.

The free availability of these highly addictive substances is a game changer in that the traditional thinking on addiction no longer applies. A person can take Oxycontin for a month and their life can be destroyed by an addition that cannot be unwound. It isn't just teens acting out, either. Many heretofore productive adults have an encounter with these substances and never recover.

Pain control is important and necessary, but we truly need powerful painkillers that don't create physical dependence in such a short period of time.
