Exactly. Pixel count is not a synonym for picture quality and is a meaningless number to cite in that context.
Not meaningless. 4MP, for example, misses a lot of detail for common uses - printing and the like. Even with everything else perfect, there's no way to fully make up for what is missed. But yes, 16MP with powerful rendering and editing can be better than 32MP without, for example. That's precisely why it's important for Apple to take advantage of their opportunity to add in the increasingly common features that boost the worth of more modest MP sensors.
