Sounds like you are just propagating the megapixel myth. The fact of the matter is that printing anything above 300 dpi is considered beyond photo quality and indistinguishable to the eye. With a 4MP image, you might note some print quality degradation with a 8x10 and above, but definitely not with a 5x7. Personally, I think the sweet spot is 6MP, which is where I shoot my DSLR. Any higher with the crappy glass on a camera phone is pure marketing fluff, IMO. The gap between the iPhone 5S' 8 MP sensor and the S5's 16 MP sensor has no real world benefit, except for the occasional need to digitally crop (which should be avoided if you can zoom by foot).
