Windows let light in only if there is light to let in. Always they are letting heat out. At night it's all out and no in. The windows need to be insulated at night [reflective and triple glazed preferably]. No windows and excellent insulation means no heat loss. If you really want to save energy to avoid Global Warming, you need to stop any heat getting out.

On bright sunny days, you could open the insulation to let sun shine in for heating but it will get too hot. It's better to reflect that incoming sunlight back into space without having it enter the house and therefore heat the atmosphere outside as it leaks back out. If one is serious, one needs to do these things. If it's for show then of course one can turn sunlight into atmospheric heating and not care, but that's called hypocrisy.

You seem to be confusing two things, "free" and avoiding Global Warming. Free energy is not necessarily environmentally sound. Incoming sunlight should NOT be trapped but as Wharfie does, it should be reflected right back out again. The heat you should use to stay warm is your food energy and energy conducted from the ground. Wind energy is okay too as that's going to turn to heat one way or another anyway, so you might as well use it. Photovoltaics are naughty and contribute to Global Warming. Wind energy can give you electricity, geological heat can keep you warm and do cooking.
