White Island or a new caldera at Matata could send a megawave my way before breakfast.

Doubt that the White will blow a biggie. It's continually bubbling and belching so pressure's not building up. I've been out there. Interesting place with the old sulfur mining ruins as well..

What makes you think that Matata might be active, other than it sits on or near the fault line? Nice beach there..

As for Taupo, the winds on the North Island can blow from any direction, so you might not catch the downwind in Auckland if it were to erupt (which it will, sooner or later). You're correct though, that there will a lot of casualties when it happens. Frodo Baggins and Hobbiton are just up the road from there, and they'll get it as well..
