You do realize that no "local tide gauge" measures sea level. Not even all taken together measure sea level.

On the other hand, if you need to harbor a boat what you need is a local measure of depth, etc. That's what tide gauges are intended to tell you.

If you want to know if your house will be under water you need to know if your land is sinking or the water is rising unless your house is resting on the tide gauge.

Measuring sea level is very difficult. Only possible from space, hence no historical record.
