Very good point. It is widely discussed that the refresh cycle is long, but not specifically because of the durability of tablets. The durability isn't unique to iPads... we deployed a ton of Nexus 7s (first gen) to save money versus iPads and none of them have had problems. And many of these are in high-use applications (waitresses, in mobile fleets, etc.)

Smartphone manufacturers will need to consider this too when making phones water-resistant. Water damage is the #1 cause of totaled phones, so with many high-end phones about to adopt water-resistance, it too could lengthen the average replacement cycle.
