I don’t see a problem with Dowd’s logic. With regards to Condoleezza Rice, in lieu of protests, I felt Condi bowed out with the grace and honor I have come to expect from her.

“Commencement should be a time of joyous celebration for the graduates and their families,” Rice said. “Rutgers’ invitation to me to speak has become a distraction for the university community at this very special time.”

People who are not yet part of the establishment are generally not yet bound too much by a group identity that imposes some artificial restraints on their commentary. College students have time to think and generally unrestrained free speech (except for peer pressure). In the best of all worlds we would hear protests that are balanced perfectly, neither left or right just rational complaints against corruption or flaws in the system. I encourage protesting from students and think there should be more of it.

Conrad made unwarranted assumptions and then leveled mean spirited attacks on a strawman he labeled Condoleezza Rice. He went so far as to sneer at people who strive to succeed. You just can’t get any more radical left than that. I liked his comment about moral shortcuts except that it would be more applicable to every living politician in the administration and in congress before it would be applicable to Condi, the most ethically clean person to have served during her lifetime.
