Very-large magnetic media makes sense for those with high random-access read/write access to the media.

CD-W makes great sense for low-cost "write once" use. (Actually, you can always "add" to CD-W until it is full or you "close the session" and stop future additions. If you make it a point to burn only when you are finished, you can store approximately 6x a Zip drive capacity on a single CD-W). At $4 each or less, they're very affordable.

I just purchased a SparQ (Parallel) today. First impression: Pretty good - works as advertised. Detailed review to follow....
