| The more I read about the UCSB shooter, the more it reminds you of the Lanza shooting, and all the other cases where mentally ill teens, whose families knew they had issues, get guns and kill a lot of other people's children. If we want to stop this, we need to stop being so quiet about mental illness- accept that it's an illness we need to talk about, and that it's worth assisting people who need help- and we need to be a lot more proactive. And not just because of mass shootings- but because we could make a lot of people's lives better, if we helped them more with their mental illnesses. Most of the mentally ill don't act out, but they do suffer- so this would be a win win. First, help the mentally ill because it's the right thing to do- and will reduce the amount of suffering in the world. Second, help the mentally ill because it might stop a crime, and it might stop your own kid from being killed (not that this is super likely- but isn't one preventable death too many, when prevention doesn't involved taking away rights, or torturing people, but merely involves assisting people in ways that could help them live better?) |
