I had been wondering if InvenSense would ever try to integrate their sensors with GPS or other satellite systems. Earlier, there were job postings in this area, but I never saw any products. This job posting seems to indicate that they are starting something along these lines:

Sr. Staff Software Navigation Algorithm Engineer (Job ID: 12143)

We are looking for experienced and talented Algorithm / Software engineers to develop algorithms for pedestrian navigation using MEMS inertial sensors on smart phones, tablets or wearable devices. The successful candidate should be familiar with inertial navigation system design, development and test. Experience with modeling and simulation of inertial navigation sensors, mechanizations and embedded software is required.

Requirements & Education
  • PhD/MS on EE/CE/ME/Math/Physics
  • Working knowledge of inertial navigation algorithms, Kalman filter, particle filter, sensor fusion
  • Knowledge of GPS or Wifi navigation is a big plus
  • Proficient in C and Matlab
  • Embedded programming for mobile consumer platforms
  • 7+ years related experience
