Why? I don't think you can blame parents- no one knows if they're going to have a child with problems, and once that child becomes an adult you have very little control. It looks like his parents tried to get help- and the system failed them. If you recall, other parents have tried to get help- Dahmer's dad, for example, tried to get help with his son- knew something was wrong, but couldn't get help. With privacy laws being what they are, you can't expect parents to be able to control adults. But you could work on reducing the stigma around mental illness, and making sure more treatment is available, and for darn sure ensuring that people who tip off police, when someone is acting oddly, are listened to.
