Especially, given the rumors that China is massing 300,000 soldiers on the Vietnamese border.

It could get ugly fast.

Another part of the equation are the wealthy Russians who have built modern and well used resort/vacation facilities along the old S Vietnamese Coast, in towns like Nha Trang.

South of Nha Trang at our old base in Cam Rahn Bay, the Russians spent about 40 years building it to 4x its original size and the home to much of their military fleet. That is over now. The leases expired and the Soviet navy withdrew a few years ago.

Cam Rahn Bay remains the largest and deepest port in Southeast Asia and is also accessible by rail.
That makes it important militarily and for civilian commerce.

We should also not forget that the enormous rice growing, Delta in S Vietnam is called the bread basket of Southeast Asia.
I've even bought rice grown there at COSTCO. I'd bet China dreams about that rice.
