I did not believe Saddam was an immediate threat to the US in 2002-2003, and yet I supported the invasion and capture of Saddam. I was so disgusted by the sanctions policy which had morphed into targeting innocents in order to bring a revolution against Saddam's regime. That was never going to happen, as the regime was becoming more powerful while Saddam's internal enemies were systematically dying of curable disease and increasingly poor living conditions. I have always held that the targeting of innocents in order to bring harm to your real enemy is a sin. I posted at the time that comments coming from the Administration about the deaths of 500k children being "worth it," was unconscionable and that if Saddam is our enemy we should be targeting him directly. There were other good reasons to strike Saddam but that one was good enough all by itself.

Koan and tejek conveniently forget that the overwhelming belief, based on the broad picture given by intelligence was persuasive at the time. Of course we can mine some comments from the era that disagreed with that conclusion but they were not prominent or persuasive, there are always dissenting commentary.

In addition the sanctions had begun to fail as Saddam was making back door deals with countries not supporting the sanctions. The weapons of mass destruction issue will forever be inconclusive, but no one should doubt that he was biding his time until he could renew those efforts; and the time to strike effectively was exactly when we did.

Saddam was defeated handily in short order. The remaining years were about establishing a secure and free country and it was working well until the Obama administration took over.
