Francois Hollande holds emergency cabinet meeting after European electoral 'earthquake' sees far-Right Front National make historic gains

France’s political establishment was in total disarray on Monday as François Hollande blamed an "incomprehensible" Europe on the far-Right Front National coming first in EU elections.

The deeply unpopular president, whose Socialist Party suffered its worst ever score in European elections, said there was a "painful truth" behind the FN clinching 25 per cent of the vote, ahead of the opposition centre-Right UMP, on 21 per cent.


"Europe has become unreadable, distant and frankly incomprehensible even for governments,” he said in a televised address.

“This cannot go on. Europe must be simple, clear - to be effective where it is expected and withdraw where it isn’t necessary.”

“Europe cannot advance without France but France’s future is in Europe,” he insisted, adding that his duty was to “reform France and re-orient Europe”.
