Nominations for biggest, overblown, hype story of 1997....

IMO the hands down winner should be:

#1 - The Y2K "crisis".

followed by...

#2 - Magic pills for impotent men. Not only has it fueled speculation in garbage like Vivus and Zonagen - but even put hot air under reputable drug giant Pfizer, as analysts have projected ridiculous multi-billion dollar revenue streams from these drugs. I guess the analysts figured that 100% of the general male population would become impotent. I figure they probably extrapolated after studying men who work on Wall Street.

#3 - Bre-x. We project 10 million ounces....25 million ounces....70 million ounces.....100 million ounces.....Oops! Guess there isn't any gold at all! Now please excuse me, I'm late for a meeting with my Cayman Islands real estate broker.

Any others?
