I think we should keep in mind that Apple was responsible for the popularity of 128Kbps and earbuds.

I was once very demanding about audio and spent a lot of money to be that way. Today, as my hearing has declined with age, I can't tell the difference between good sound and bad sound. But the vast population just doesn't care about sound quality as long as it is reasonable. They do want convenience and fashion, though.

I have no idea where Apple takes this but I don't believe they're spending that money without having a pretty well defined game plan in mind. Whatever happens, the "Beats" brand will be defined by Apple, not the other way around.
