To me, this Beats deal is Apple's way of sidestepping the issue of diluting their brand while addressing the need to move down market from their position as a supplier of only premium products. Consider that now they have two brands to carry products to market under, the premium Apple brand and the good enough (and very popular as well) Beats brand. The DNA of the company is split and together two brands are going to reach much further into the consumer sphere.

Just my opinion. FWIW.
