From my understanding, the headphones are not part of the high end premium business, except in price. I once tried some and was unimpressed compared to my cheapo Sony's, and I definitely hear a difference between 16bit/44khz and 24bit/48khz. So they should have been impressive given they are at least 5 times as expensive.

The attraction is people who are into rap prefer artificially loud bass, and the headphones give them this quality.

I would think Apple would be foolish to mess with that formula. They'd be better off developing their own midrange white boy headphones for the other demographic and of course improving ear buds.

For me I'm very happy with my cheapo Sonys. So happy I bought half a dozen because I know that products that popular are frequently discontinued. The only thing I don't like about them is my iPod won't let me turn it up loud enough.

This is why I hate it when people riding in my car tell me to turn it down. I just stop and let them out.
