A question re. competitive spirit for you men:
Yesterday i sat through a baseball game for 12 and 13 year olds and watched the score get run up to 18-3. Long after the score was uneven, this coach instructed his boys to push, run, steal home, and yelled things at our pitcher. It was a beautiful evening and should have left all involved feeling happy just to be out doing and watching something that is, after all, just a kids' game. Why does a man feel compelled not just to win but to humiliate a group of young boys in the process? Is this a variation on the adolescent bully theme? Is this something testosterony that we moms just don't comprehend? Wouldn't it have been a wonderful chance to teach that winning can occur without demoralizing opponents, not by playing with less intensity but by switching positions or not stealing on every passed ball? This is a very nice man off the field, but as a coach....??? My husband (who happens to be our coach and a man with infinite compassion and a philosophical view of life)just says he's a jerk and tells the kids to have fun. We moms would have preferred to tie him to a rock and cut out his liver because he's messing with our babies. This behavior is not at all unique and I wonder what goes on in coaches and dads' heads who behave in this way. Just thought I'd ask the only male group I know.
Thanks for letting me vent.
