Slavery wasn't exactly a conservative vs liberal issue, it was a north vs south issue. The north, conservatives, liberals, and others, generally opposed it.

Whether it was or wasn't, it became an important issue for the South and conservatives.

As for constitutional interpretations, rightly or wrongly before the civil war they fairly consistently supported the institution of slavery.

Good point. The Constitution isn't quite the democratic document you all love to make it. In reality it was written by primitives much like the bible and needs to be updated from time to time.

Conservatives are loyal to the Constitution onlywhen it coincides with their ideology.

To a certain extent that's true about all large political groups in the US, but its more true about the left then about conservatives.

LOL. Except all the major complaints about the Constitution and its updates come from the right. But its the left that has the most problems You all play the victim so well. Its crazy.
