The Twelfth Day of Christmas

On the Twelfth day of Christmas I thought about my youngest child.
with her twinkling innocent eyes staring at the tree as she smiled
Reminiscing back to the Yule time yester years I had in my youth
wondering about what I would get while plotting like a sleuth

You know sneak a peeks, accidental shakes, plus weight and size
contriving new tactics knowing full well I would have to improvise
Wondering if I could get away with maybe just a maneuver or two
which for a nearly every young child this is the natural thing to do

Wondering if there was really a Santa with small reindeers and toys
the lights, the caroling, the sweets, are some of the Christmas joys
Oh and the presents, lets not forget the those first and foremost,
I could see that Christmas had her young mind totally engrossed

'I know what you're thinking.' I said, giving her a hug from the rear
she replied, 'Daddy how many candy canes are on the tree this year?'
