The RBOCs are at it again. The America's Carriers Telecommunications Association (ACTA)has petioned the federal appeals court to overturn the FCC's long standing rule exempting Internet service providers (ISPs) from paying per-minute switched access fees to local exchange carriers....

Long distance carriers now pay an average of about 2.5 centys per minute in switched access fees on each end...

March, 1997 - PacBell proposed a 1cent per-minute access fee for ISP...

The above from NETWORK WORLD 12/8/97.

Let me figure this out now: I pay about $17 per month for a extra (home office) telephone line. Add in the per-call charges and I pay Bell Atlantic at total of about $24 for that line. I pay my ISP $21. Say we spend 15 hours a week... (My wife and kids log on, too) the switched access fee at 1 cent per-minute will be $36 + taxes... say $39. So far were up to $84. Now... xDSL service, when offered, will cost an additional $50 per month?. Now I'm up to $134 per month. What's two-way Internet access via cable running nowdays... help me out here folks... $60 per month with unlimmited access? And its always "on"? And I won't need that extra telephone line, then, will I? So I'm saving $74 a month by going with a cable modem?! *$&@% Bell Atlantic. Sorry Westell. Hurry up and gimmie my cable modem!
