I assume that a vendor such as Kitco ensures that it deals with sources such that if it sells you a gold bar, it's gold through and through. If so, it would seem to be well worth paying the extra government tax to ensure that one avoids one of the scams you mentioned!! Do you know if Kitco buys direct from a reputable gold bar supplier, or does it pour the bars itself?
