The trend was clearly in that direction with or without government enforcement. We are now finding that taking the time to turn hearts and minds in the right direction is a much more realistic approach than force.

The Civil War era is a piece of our history I've read very little about -- a few biographies like Frederick Douglas and Grant and a couple others. One day, I plan to get around to it.

But my impression is that it [slavery] was coming to an end either way, and the war was a waste of a lot of human life and property. While the frequently made argument is that it was about states' rights, I really think it was a clash of two disparate economies. States rights clearly was at issue. Slavery was clearly an issue. But in the North everyone was on someone else's time. In the South, you had slaves but you also had a ton of people who were just doing their own things to get by. Just two different kinds of civilization.
