I think it will. The graphics chip business has too many competitors and some consolidation is needed, and will occur one way or another.

This deal is just a confirmation of that.

Re: "Auburn" - That is the i740 chip - an article published yesterday on CNET discussed this chip and mentioned an introduction for around February.

The article seemed to put a slant on excessive power consumption for the i740 chip (Auburn). An Intel spokesperson mentioned that the existing silicon was not the final silicon.

In fact, I have been irecently learned that the i740 has been shrunk from an ubelievable 0.6 micron process (the one currently sampled) to the high volume 0.35 micron process. The heat problem is now a non-issue. I would assume that a major speed-up was also obtained due to the smaller geometries.
