AAPL stock as currency

I have always felt that AAPL hording cash in order to use cash for acquisitions was simply causing a large chunk of it's business to have a growth rate of less than 1% attached to it. That the cash, invested in AAPL stock would then have the growth rate of AAPL itself.

But as i think about things this morning, were AAPL to buy a publicly traded company, the stock split now enables the stock to be used as currency in such a transaction. The same situation occured with Berkshire Hathaway when they bought Burlington Northern. The stock split was a catalyst for a lot of good things that happened to the stock. Burlington shareholders got BRKB stock in a tax free exchange and Berkshire was added to a number of indexes. As a Berkshire shareholder then, it was a profitable time.

while the stated intent of the split is to make the stock more "accessible" to smaller shareholders, I'm wondering if there might be a Paypal or other unit of a publicly traded company on the radar screen?
