Hi Bill,

I am impressed by your knowledge regarding reclaiming silver from batteries and selling it and the caveats about purchasing gold bars. For several years I had been helping a friend collect discarded copper (wires and scraps) for use in reclaiming silver from silver nitrate solutions.

That friend (a retired chemistry teacher) has about 5 pounds (80 oz) of silver collected over the years (reclaimed from X'ray films provided by a hospital for use in a science fair project and from class demos of single replacement reactions. The silver was stripped from the films by means of dilute aqueous nitric acid. The excess acid was neutralised with aqueous ammonia solution and the silver was precipitated by means of the single replacement reaction,

Ag(ions) + copper metal ---> silver metal + copper(II) ions.

My friend thinks the silver obtained is about 98% pure (impurities are some specks of copper and copper oxides and possibly some silver oxide). My friend will greatly appreciate it if you would tell what to look out for before selling, where he could sell his silver and for how much.

He asks me to thank you in advance.
