To anyone wanting to do a little number crunching before 12/31, the IRS has released the 1997 schedule D and instructions at:

irs.ustreas.gov

Click the mailbox - forms & pub. -what's hot in tax forms - 1997 sch. D -separate instructions. To download in PDF format you might need Adobe Acrobat Reader which is available for free on the same page.

With the change in rates and holding periods and dates pertaining to each it might not be a bad idea to run it thru before year-end.
