Rookie Question

When a company buys back shares I understand these shares are retired and therefore outstanding shares are reduced and benefits the shareholder. The question is how do these companies buy back the shares. Would they hire broker to look at charts (Like KIRK) and decide OK today is a good day to buy some. OR how bout every friday we'll buy certain percent of the buyback program. Just curious how buyback programs work.

TIA
A Rookie
