When folks talk about NCs I think they're talking more of a corporate box than a set-top unit. Intel is developing the latter as a separate product so let's just address the corporate NC where the goal is low maintenance costs in terms of hardware and software support. There's nothing that can't be achieved, given those objectives, simply using reconfigured PC hardware and some new software. How long would Wintel box makers like Compaq take to put together a killer NC? Look, the productivity gains from 3D tools and applications with rich media content can't be ignored. IBM is blind if it doesn't see that the requirements are about to go up, way up, for the entry level box if users and corporations want to benefit from the coming revolution in software tools and applications.
