I'm not against interventions in principle - provided, you know WHAT you're doing, and WHY.
Libya is the ultimate in failing both criteria. Even now, it seems, no one has a clue as to what we did there, and why. I, for one, don't. Out of all the recent conflict, Serbia, IMO, is a close second.
A simple but important principle in foreign policy and life in general is to be careful when picking both friends - and enemies. And it's important to try not to wobble. Which is what we've been doing. Like, for example, Mr. Rouhani gives us a mysterious smile, and we're ready to jump in bed with him.
We should do what Muslims do - if the times are hard and confusing, go back to your basics. In OUR case, that would be traditional American values. Would work better than sticking with fantasies. |
